Welcome to Travel Soccer

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Kate had her first travel soccer tournament this weekend and I think it was a bit of an eye-opener for some of the girls. They won’t be able to rely just on speed and athleticism any more, not when every other team out there also has their fair share of speedy and athletic girls. Despite all that, Kate and the rest of the family is looking forward to the upcoming season, and luckily there aren’t too many direct conflicts with Ben’s games.  Click on each picture below to launch a slideshow from each game.

Kate got to play keeper for the first half of Game 2.

The Big Field

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Ben has transitioned to playing on a full-sized field this year and I am finding it a very different game to shoot.  The last couple of years of small-sided games have been easy in comparison, since the action was compressed and much easier to follow.  Now that the field of play is so much bigger it’s harder to track the action.

I bought a new lens for more reach — a Sigma 100-300 f/4 — which has its own learning curve.  The zoom lens works opposite from Canon’s so that’s taking some adjusting.  It’s also a lot heavier than my 70-200 so I’m going to have to learn to shoot with a monopod I think.  But the primary thing I’m going to have to get used to is its relatively slow focusing speed.  It hunts a lot more than my Canon.  This trait isn’t such a handicap when shooting swimming or golf, since a swimmer’s path is predictable and a golfer isn’t moving away from the plane of focus.  Soccer players, on the other hand, are much more erratic!

So I’ve got my own pre-season kinks to work out, just like the boys in their opening tournament.  Click on the photo below to launch a slideshow.

Michigan Soccer Trip

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Last year a team from Michigan, whose coach had grown up playing with Ben’s club, made their way east to visit DC and play a little soccer.  Ben’s team hosted an exchange, which included overnight home stays, scrimmages, a pool party, and a trip to a DC United game.  This year it was time for the Titans to visit TKO and a small contingent made the trip in early August.

It was a fun time by all accounts.  The Titans visited the shores of Lake Michigan, enjoyed go-kart races and some soccer, and stayed overnight with several of the TKO boys.  The TKO folks were very gracious hosts, providing lunch at the beach and inviting the adult chaperones to the head coach’s home for dinner.  I did not go, but another parent graciously provided me with pictures from their trip.
