Tropical Storm Hannah blew through the eastern seaboard today and deposited enormous amounts of rain in our area. One nearby city reported 9″ of rain by mid-afternoon. Our neighborhood is fronted by a creek, which most days, is a placid little trickle. Not today. Today it overflowed its banks and flooded the main artery, getting so deep that one car that tried to traverse it was flooded. The police closed the main road and that became and excuse for a neighborhood party. Folks trekked down to the neighborhood entrance and gaped at the drowned car, the whirlpool in the creek that had tree limbs spinning around, and the flooded street. Kids played in the middle of the main road, which normally has cars whizzing by at 55 mph!
I’ve cropped the previous picture to show the submerged car, and added a helpful arrow! I had given the camera to Ted since he was willing to wade out into the water to take a picture but I forgot that he always forgets how a camera works and he failed to zoom in. To be fair, the picture wouldn’t have been great anyway, since I only had the kit lens on the camera. When Ben called me to come down he didn’t tell me how far away the submerged car was so I assumed it was right in front of our neighborhood. It’s now 5 hours since I went down there to look and the car is still submerged. They are letting cars in and out of our neighborhood but the main road is closed off for everyone else. I heard that thankfully the driver managed to get out before the car flooded.
Where we came from, flooded streets are not uncommon even when there’s no storm. To be trapped inside your house because of high waters because of torrential rains is acceptable. But when it’s caused by government neglect is intolerable.
At least you guys seemed to have enjoyed the wading end of it.
