I’m back to shooting soccer again, in the natural light. I’m rusty after shooting basketball all winter, but no matter, it’s still much much better than shooting indoors! Ben’s team had a pre-season tournament this past weekend, which almost got rained out. But the organizers shortened games on Saturday, and then salvaged a few of the older age groups to play on turf on Sunday, and Ben’s team was one of the lucky few. They were one goal away from making the finals, which was a bit frustrating, but it worked out ok. That meant that we had no conflicts with Kate’s swim practice and gave Ben time to finish his homework. So here’s to soccer season!

Back Outdoors Again
Tuesday, March 31st, 2009Wait Until Next Year
Monday, March 9th, 2009Alas, the playoffs ended much too quickly for the boys. Despite the #1 seed, or perhaps because of it, they got knocked out of the tournament this weekend. I told Ted when they won the regular season that it was better to be the #2 seed in this age group, given that the #1 had never won the tournament. Adding to this bit of superstition, this time of year is ripe with conflicts, given that soccer is starting up again, and it’s also the same time as the District band competition. Ben luckily had his band competition on Friday night, but we lost one of our rebounders on Saturday to his baritone sax obligations and our top all-around player to a soccer tournament. The boys played hard but just couldn’t get it together. Oh well, at least they got a regular season trophy out of it.
Ted also says that this is his last year of coaching the boys, but he said that last year too. I keep trying to tell him to stick it out one more year, until Ben starts high school. We’ll see. Pictures from the last two games are below.
It’s Playoff Time!
Sunday, March 1st, 2009The post-season tournament is here, at least for the boys (the playoffs don’t start until 4th grade so Kate just has regular games). Their game yesterday was quite exciting, since it was a rematch against the team that handed them their only loss — the last game of the season. This time, however, the Rockets had their big guy available and Ted devised a system to break through the constant press. The boys had the game well in hand, leading by 13 going into the 4th quarter, but it ended up being much closer. With less than a minute to go in the game, the other team closed to within 3, but then #4 came up big with a steal and an ensuing bucket to seal the game. Very exciting!
