Back to the Regimen

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

The regimen of sports schedules that is, soon to be followed by school schedule.  Soccer season officially opened for both kids, who both had tournaments this weekend.  Ted and I split days with me taking Kate on Saturday and Ted taking Ben.  We switched on Sunday.  Kate’s team did very well, winning their bracket and making it to the semifinals.  The team makes great progress every season and she is still having fun.  Ben had his morning game cancelled on Saturday because of lingering effects from tropical storm Danny but they squeezed in two games today.  The boys lost yesterday but went 1-1 today, winning their last game.

But the exciting news is that my 1D Mark II arrived on Friday and I put it through its paces this weekend.  It took me a bit to figure out all the controls and the focusing mechanism but I think I got it mostly figured out by Sunday.   The camera was rated as Excellent+, which was accurate.  It’s in mint condition and from what I can tell had very few actuations.  This should last me a long time!  I bought it at KEH and I highly recommend them.   Anyway, the proof of the camera’s performance is below.  The pictures are of both Kate’s games from Saturday, and Ben’s first game today.

The one thing I can’t figure out is why the pictures look so much darker in the slideshow than they do in Photoshop.  Another project for another day.

Our Favorite Place

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

I finally finished reviewing the pictures from the beach and have them posted below.  We once again spent a week on St. George Island, with our very good friends, and had the most wonderful time.  I’m hard pressed to say exactly why we love St. George Island so much, but I think it’s the combination of the physical beauty of the place, the relative isolation, the relaxed pace, and the opportunity to savor family and friends.  No distractions, no demands on our time, nothing but easy conversation and time spent together.  I took the pictures immediately below with my old Rebel since I still haven’t managed to bring the 20D back in.  But not to worry, my new-to-me 1D Mark II is on its way and should be here in time for this weekend’s soccer tournaments!

And lest you think everything is all sweetness during these photo shoots, I’ve decided to post some outtakes.   I’m actually thinking that a couple of these are candidates for our holiday card this year!
