Double Digits

Today is Kate’s birthday and she’s been celebrating for three days!  Saturday we brought cupcakes to her basketball game to share with her team afterwards, and then out to dinner at a place of her choosing.  Now usually she picks a local restaurant renowned for their Peking Duck (it’s the kind of place that has photos of local politicians like say, a former President, on its walls).  But for some reason this time she was fixated on Golden Corral, so we went there for the second time ever.  Fun for all, except perhaps Ben, whose mouth was still sore after getting his second set of braces on Wednesday.

Then Sunday Kate asked for a special dinner of grilled tilapia and rice pilaf.  And then today, her actual birthday, I made homemade Hostess cupcakes for her class, Ted volunteered at their supplemental art class (today’s artist: Claude Monet), and I picked her up after sch0ol for a late lunch at Coastal Flats and shopping on the mall.  Then, another special birthday meal of grilled flank steak and steamed broccoli, with chocolate ganache cake for dessert.  It’s been a never ending party!

I’ve got a couple of grainy pictures that I took with my phone, and then a video taken with the Flip camera I got for Christmas.  The video is typical of how our birthday singing usually goes, including Ben’s distraction at the end.

More Basketball

Fun games for both kids this weekend.  Ben had his game first, and although he didn’t score any points, he played good defense and forced several turnovers.  His team played really well together and remain undefeated this season.  Kate, unfortunately, has not had the same luck but they come ever so close!  Her game was a 1-point game in the last minute but the other team sank a crucial basket at the end to seal their victory.  But it doesn’t bother Kate in the least, so long as she’s having fun with her friends.

Ben also started playing futsal on Sunday.  He loves playing since it’s a small field with only 4 field players.  You are actively involved no matter where you are on the field.  Ben scored 5 goals, and since he primarily plays defense in outdoor soccer, this was a rare treat for him.  No pictures from futsal since those lighting conditions are even more dismal than basketball, although I might try to bring my little Flip camera next week.  If I’m succesful, I’ll post clips here.
