Sunday’s Games

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Bright noontime sun for Kate’s game but somehow the glare was manageable this time.  I’m not quite sure what the difference was.  Maybe more of the action was turned towards me?  Shrug.  Ben got to volunteer as an assistant referee for the game (which is why the first picture is of him) and since he didn’t get paid, it counts towards his community service hours.  One funny incident happened when the center ref brought Ben and the parent volunteer from the other team together to discuss how he liked to run his games.  He told the ARs to stay with the second to last defender and the adult turned to Ben and asked condescendingly, “Do you know what he means by that?”  Ben was much too polite and just nodded yes.  I told him the next time he needs to say, “Yes, I’m a Grade 8 referee and I am certified to center this game.  Do you understand?”

I was only able to go to the first half of Ben’s game since I had to take Kate to swim practice.  The Titans lost 0-1 on a corner kick but at least it was a good game!  I had a hard time getting into a rhythm for a couple of reasons.  I was on the half with the AR running in front of me but couldn’t switch because then I would be shooting into the sun.  Kate kept a running conversation the whole time I was there.  And there were two moms from the other team directly to my left who were quite enthusiastic in their support.  Plus the game started off with about 5 throw-ins in the first few minutes so there was no flow.

Last Week

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

I forgot to post pictures from Kate’s game last week!  Nothing remarkable, and a couple that I normally would have deleted were it not for the backstory.  One of them is when Kate accidentally stepped on the hand of the opponent’s star forward, who happens to be best friends with another girl on Kate’s team.  There was concern the next day that the hand might be broken but x-rays revealed no fracture, only a very deep bruise.  Kate didn’t even realize she had stepped on her hand!  The other picture illustrates one of the dangers of soccer — cleat/head contact.  One of our girls took a cleat to the head but didn’t even stop playing.  The opponent was called for a foul but the ref let her off easy by not giving her a yellow.

One final note — Kate nearly scored!  She usually plays defense so her scoring opportunities are few and far between.  However, there was a free kick at the top of the box so everyone was pushed way up.  The kick ricocheted off the wall and in Kate’s direction, who stepped up and took a shot with her LEFT foot that just sailed wide.  Now that would have been exciting!

What Did You Do Over The Long Weekend?

One guess as to how we spent our time.  But only for Kate.  Ben’s team is doing a post-season tournament and skipped Columbus Day.  Sound decision, given the injury rate at the moment.
