We’ve been back for a week but this is my first chance at posting pictures. I brought my old Rebel down to the beach since I didn’t want to lug the 1DMKII and managed to shoot some pictures before the shutter failed. I had just gotten some good pictures of all the kids when I decided to look at the images on the LCD when I noticed that the bottom half of the latest pictures was all black. The trusty Rebel has bitten the dust. Given its age and the cost to repair, I’m better off buying a used 20D as a backup rather than getting it fixed.

But I got some decent pictures, I think. At least good enough for a Christmas card coming to you in about 4 months! And this year we went with a good friend of mine from law school, so we had 11 folks total at the beach. It was loads of fun and as usual, very relaxing. I hesitate to even post the name of the place because we like having it all to ourselves!

I finally finished reviewing the pictures from the beach and have them posted below. We once again spent a week on St. George Island, with our very good friends, and had the most wonderful time. I’m hard pressed to say exactly why we love St. George Island so much, but I think it’s the combination of the physical beauty of the place, the relative isolation, the relaxed pace, and the opportunity to savor family and friends. No distractions, no demands on our time, nothing but easy conversation and time spent together. I took the pictures immediately below with my old Rebel since I still haven’t managed to bring the 20D back in. But not to worry, my new-to-me 1D Mark II is on its way and should be here in time for this weekend’s soccer tournaments!

And lest you think everything is all sweetness during these photo shoots, I’ve decided to post some outtakes. I’m actually thinking that a couple of these are candidates for our holiday card this year!

The Columbus Day Tournament was a washout (literally) so I didn’t have any games to shoot last weekend. That left me time to go over the pictures from the beach, which I had been putting off because I just wasn’t happy with the way they turned out. First, I was shooting in fading light because Ben got home late from a golf game. Then, Ben & Kate were peevish (to use one of Ben’s vocabulary words) and either pouted or gave me cheesy smiles. Ben also had a wad of gum that he refused to throw out, so his mouth looked funny in nearly every picture. A was the only one who cooperated and gave me great poses and expressions. Do you think it would be too weird if I used her picture on this year’s Christmas card instead of my kids?
